Elzéard Award

for

Best Environmental Film

The Elzéard Award for Best Environmental Film is named in honor of the hero in Jean Giono’s timeless story “The Man Who Planted Trees,” which was later adapted into an Academy Award-winning animated short film. The award is designed to inspire, recognize, and promote films that tell environmentally-themed stories that break the mold and alter the way people see and understand the ecosphere they inhabit. The award-winning film in 2025 will be screened at the International Avant-Garde Film Awards in New York City on September 23 during Climate Week NYC.

What We’re Looking For

Short films, feature films, documentaries, narrative films, animated films, and live action films are all eligible. The award places a premium on films that take a unique approach, overcome cliché, and that open peoples’ eyes to something new and special about the ecosphere that we inhabit. We generally look for films that tell a story about the living systems and wild places of our planet and/or the animals and people whose lives are interconnected with it. We’re also interested in films that propose innovative solutions, probe big ideas, and explore the intersection of technology and nature.

This award is apolitical and color-blind. We welcome submissions from any filmmaker in the world who has an ecological story to tell and who has the talent to convert that story into a compelling film.
